Another Cyclone Hammers Madagascar (February 21, 2008)

Tropical Cyclone Ivan slammed the big island of Madagascar east of the African mainland.
The fierce storm pounded the island with sheets of rain and screaming winds of 120 mph (200 km/h). The storm left a mess in its wake, with widespread floods and downed power and telephone poles. At least two people were killed and hundreds of others are homeless.
The cyclone is the second major one to hit the island this season. Last month, Tropical Cyclone Fame roared out of the Indian Ocean. That storm killed at least thirteen people and triggered floods over a wide area.
Ivan swirled down the west coast of the island before moving out over the Mozambique Channel. The storm took aim at Mozambique, which is already reporting a cholera outbreak linked to floods from earlier rains.
